3 Neglected Dogs - 10/8/04

These dogs are 3 of 5 dogs....see story below.
(Left to right - Peke Spanky-13 lbs., Min. Poodle Casper-14 lbs., and Min. Poodle Tinker-17 lbs.)

What I was told when I was asked to help these dogs:   In a shopping center parking lot, a woman looked into a van and saw five dogs, 3 children, several cats, a clutter of bedding, clothing, etc. scattered inside.  She called the police to investigate.  It seems that the mother, children, and the animals were LIVING IN THE VAN - running from an abusive husband.  I understand that the mother and children were taken to a shelter and agreed to give up the animals.

The three dogs above were flea infested, raw places on their skin, badly matted and dirty.  The largest (Tinker) came close to being put down by animal control because it was in such pain that it tried to bite them when handled.  However, a professional groomer volunteered to try to shave him down and succeeded.

All three were seen by a vet and he says that they are "generally healthy", but need the skin condition treated.  Tinker, the largest one is being given antibiotic.  All have been neutered and received their Rabies vaccination.   All three tested Heartworm negative.  They will be receiving their other immunizations and be wormed while with rescue.

Above:  All three boys got a bath today !  They have some stains that we will work on their next bath.

Update 10/31/04: All 3 dogs have gained a pound each!   (Spanky 14 lbs., Casper, 15 lbs., Tinker 18 lbs.)  Although these three boys play well together, they do not have to be adopted together.  Since they were living with five dogs, 3 children, and several cats, they probably did not get the individual attention that they wanted or needed.  They seem to be competing for my attention when they are together - jumping on me, etc.  Tinker is the most "lovey" of them, wanting your attention, very sweet.  He would rather be getting petting from his human than play with the other dogs.  Casper - likes attention, but is more active than Tinker.  Spanky gets along with everyone, canine, feline, or human.   He just wants to be where the action is.  Casper may be a PB miniature Poodle - his coat is curlier than Tinker.  Both have silky fine hair.  They still have some stains, but after several baths I see some tinges of a beige color - perhaps some Apricot Poodle mixed in?  I will try to get some new pictures next week.  Please check back if one of these little boys appeals to you.  They need a home of their own and lots of love.
